The Stokes Early College High School Teacher Cadet Program began in 2015 and has continued building strong teachers and educational advocates since its creation. Teacher Cadet is a semester elective course designed for students interested in pursuing a teaching degree or something in the education field; however, it is also designed for students who are seeking to grow their leadership skills and community awareness. Students study the roles of students, teachers, and schools for half of the semester, and they complete a field experience in a classroom for the second half. Students will have the opportunity to choose an age level (Elementary, Middle, or High) and gain a professional mentor from one of the Stokes County Schools.

During this time, you would normally be in your classrooms observing and assisting your teachers. Hopefully you will still get to do that, but for this week, to supplement the observation time, I’ve found five teaching films andz speeches that I’d like you to watch. There is a link and description below for each one, and you should write a reflection (minimum one page typed/written) to include in your portfolio. These reflections can be your observations and reactions from the do.;cumentaries, and they can also be about what you learned from each film.
I am not collecting these reflections separately; you should include them in your portfolio for now.

- *Teacher’s note, Content Warning: There are some tough subjects in this documentary: discussions of violence, sexual abuse, gang activty, and more. This is worth the watch, but if you are sensitive to any of these issues, proceed with caution.* With unprecedented access over the course of a year this feature-length documentary, Love Them First — Lessons from Lucy Laney Elementary, follows the determination of a charismatic north Minneapolis elementary school principal, Mauri Melander Friestleben, as she sets out to undo history. Not only does the state have the largest achievement gap between black and white children in the United States, Friestleben faced another seemingly impossible obstacle, with Lucy Laney at the bottom of the state's list of underperforming schools for two decades. It's a story of inspiration, heartbreak, perseverance and the power of love.

- From his YouTube bio: “Mr. Reynolds is a high school Literature teacher and public speaker in West Philadelphia. This channel is meant to inspire, engage, and motivate new and veteran teachers to be the teacher they always wanted to be. Reynolds uses "real rap" to share teaching tips and strategies and to give an authentic look at what it means to be a teacher in inner city Philadelphia.”
- I’m including this video because this is an experienced high school teacher with actual tips for classroom management, a topic we still need to talk more about. These tips will be highly relevant to your own teaching experience, and I recommend that you write them down! He also gives a personable side of things that work for him but with advice to come up with methods that work for you.
- Teach Us All
- On Netflix (if you don’t have access, watch this short news clip about the documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n6iVk_wsa4)
- “It’s been decades since Brown v. Board of Education, yet American schools remain largely segregated. Some leaders are working to change that.” I picked this because it’s a modern, well-done documentary about current issues that are plaguing teachers and classrooms across the nation. I think it will give you a lot of insights into different systems.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO INTERNET: Work on your portfolio. There are several things you can work on (your profile essays, for example, even journaling about this closing situation, etc.)
